Lincoln illustration

This is a recent assignment for class. I might have a crush on Mr. Lincoln — but that’s a long standing affair that we need not discuss here. At any rate, here he is! 100% illustrator, with some textures.

Jackalope linocut prints!

I’ll let you know as soon as I have enough stock , but just to let you know — there will be jackalope prints for sale in the near future!  Here’s an image of a test print, as well as the block in progress and finished.

Test print in bright orange!

Another Buddha, commissioned.

Let me start off by saying: I don’t draw people. As you can probably tell, most of what I illustrate has four legs and is furry or scaly or some combination of the two. On rare occasion (and I do hope to actually take some life drawing classes sometime soon…) I find myself rendering humans (or gods, as is the case for this image). Be gentle. Here’s a Buddha that a friend commissioned. The look was to be a bit more androgyne, with longer hair instead of the knots. I chose a couple of very true greens to sit behind him, for growth and renewal. Here he is, close up…:

And the whole piece (ugh, I need a new camera…):

White Buffalo

Okay, okay. This isn’t ‘new’. This is an older piece done as a gift that I didn’t have a photograph of before now (Thanks, Lindsey!!). So, here he is! Acrylic and (faux) gold leaf on board. This one took me about 16 hours to complete.

Work in progress.. Pick-up Dogs

A client of mine recently released his book, “Pick-up Dogs”. Its a great read — and his dogs Marcos and Lupe are amazing animals. I had a chance to illustrate them for him on an event poster that is doubling as some class work for me. Here’s the classwork version with typography requirements mostly in place. His version will look different, as I generally don’t use many effects on my type but the assignment required it:

and a detail shot of Marcos and Lupe:

Bear and Thrush, in progress… (update: Finished!)

With a day off from school, I’ve started working on a personal project for Amanda. She wanted a hermit thrush and a big bear, in a somewhat circular motion — to be used as a diptych. The thrush will be placed slightly above the bear when they are finally hung, but for now they’re side by side for better comparison while I work on them. Here are the images from the first few hours of work:

Update! Here are the paintings after the first bit of ink line-work has been applied. I forgot to mention earlier, these pieces are about 5″ x 16″ each:

UPDATE x2 — This one was the hardest for me to put up, mostly because its where *I* feel that the pieces look their worst. But, for the sake of doing this honestly — here you go. First wash of color and value:

FINAL UPDATE: Finished pieces, with gold trim and matte finish. All ready to be displayed :

Afternoon Trio (update!)

I illustrated three small pieces (small being between 4 and 5 inches or so each)  for the open house yesterday. They are each illustrated with pen and ink, with acrylic and oil.

White Buffalo

Raven

White Jackalope

And here’s another piece that is currently for sale — a quick illustration from last year…
